Frank Stanley Foss b 1923

Frank's second name was chosen by Sigi, presumably for some family reason, now not known. Frank was killed in action flying Mosquitos in Borneo in 1946 (5?)

Frank went straight into the RAF from school, becoming a pilot in coastal command. He distinguished himself during the North African Landings. After six planes in Frank's Beaufighter squadron failed to return to Gibraltar from a recce mission over Casablanca, the C-in-C, General Eisenhower, asked Frank, the next on the list of he was prepared to carry out a survey. As he was approaching Casablanca, six Grumman Wildcats emerged out of the clouds; happily Frank waggled his wings in time otherwise he would have been shot down like the other six pilots. For volunteering he was awarded the DSO. Unfortunately he celebrated too wholeheartedly that night and threw a bottle of whisky at the station officer, whom he presumably disliked, so that the decoration was cancelled.

Towards the end of the war, he was transferred to Mosquitos and sent to the far east to cooperate with the US forces against the Japanese, his squadron being trained to use heavy water bombs for sinking battleships. His squadron was then stationed of Labua off the Borneo coast.  Here the Mosquito aircraft had a lot of trouble, being made of wood panels glued together, the tropics showed the glue to be un-airworthy and several planes were lost. When the fault was thought cured, Frank volunteered to test the plane and was last seen with his undercarriage half down flying into a hillside. He was 23.
